Spoiler warning: this page gives away the ending of Ugly, Anurag Kashyap’s thriller with Rahul Bhat and Ronit Roy.
What happened to Kali?
She was kidnapped by the toy seller who was selling masks near Rahul’s car, not by anyone in her family. She is found dead in the sidecar of a motorbike. The toy seller was killed by a car on the first day, while Rahul and Chaitanya chased him, so for the rest of the film nobody who was after the ransom actually had her.
Who made the ransom calls?
Almost everyone. Rahul’s agent Chaitanya made calls in a disguised voice and used a child’s audition recording. The actress Rakhee used the same recording, Shalini’s brother Siddhant demanded money from her, and Shalini kept part of the money back. Each saw a chance to profit from Kali’s disappearance.
What does the ending mean?
When Rahul realises that Bose, the police chief and Kali’s stepfather, does not know where she is either, he murders Chaitanya, and Rakhee leaves with the money. The police finally follow the lead on the toy seller and his aunt, who had a history of taking children.
The last shot shows Bose flicking away his cigarette while a female officer wonders whether Kali could have been saved. The title is the point: the adults’ greed and grudges wasted the time that might have saved her.
