Spoiler warning: this page gives away the ending of Lucia (2013), Pawan Kumar’s Kannada thriller with Sathish Ninasam in a double role.
Which life is real?
Nikhil’s. The film seems to show Nikki, a cinema usher, dreaming he is Nikhil, a film star. The ending turns that around. Nikhil the star is the real man, and Nikki’s ordinary life is his dream.
What is the clue?
In an old interview, Nikhil says he has been colour-blind since a childhood accident and dreams of living as an ordinary usher in love with a simple woman. That is why his star life is shown in black and white and Nikki’s life in colour. Both took the Lucia pill, which lets users dream the life they want.
How does he wake up?
Nikhil jumped from a roof and lies in a coma. Detective Sanjay decides he tried to stay in the dream for good. He recreates the dream’s last moment and pretends to shoot him with an empty gun. In the dream, Nikhil is shot in the head and the world around him vanishes. He wakes up.
What does the last scene show?
Nikhil, Shwetha and Shankranna, all alive, happily running an old cinema together. He gets the ordinary life he dreamed of.
