Spoiler warning: this page gives away the ending of Agent Sai Srinivasa Athreya (2019), the Telugu detective comedy with Naveen Polishetty.
Who is the mastermind?
Vasudha, one of three criminology students the film first presents as possible victims. When her classmates Ajay and Harsha began uncovering her operation, she killed them and set Athreya up to take the blame. Athreya traces her to the Karni Mata temple in Rajasthan, where she and her father are arrested.
What is the scam?
A gang targets poor, grieving Hindu families and offers to take their dead to Varanasi for last rites for free. Instead it takes the fees, dumps the bodies along the railway line between Chennai and Delhi, and uses the dead people’s fingerprints to get past bank security and steal identities. Railway staff cremate the bodies as unclaimed.
Who is Gopalam?
The prisoner who called himself Maruthi Rao and told Athreya a fake story about a murdered daughter. He is a small part of the gang, and once caught he confesses how it works.
Why does it hit Athreya so hard?
The same scam was used on his own mother’s body. Her death had haunted him since he was young. At the end, he and Sneha pay their respects to the unnamed victims at a crematorium and return to their small office in Nellore.
