Spoiler warning: this page gives away the ending of No Smoking (2007), Anurag Kashyap’s film with John Abraham, Ayesha Takia and Paresh Rawal, based on a Stephen King story.

What are Baba Bangali’s punishments?

Each time K smokes, the punishment gets worse:

  1. A loved one is locked for five minutes in a room filled with all the smoke he has ever made.
  2. One of his fingers is cut off.
  3. A loved one is killed.
  4. His soul is taken.

What happens at the end?

K lights a cigarette during “Zero Minute”, when Baba allows smoking. Suddenly he is in a remote Russian army base, and his wife calls asking why he thinks she is dead. He escapes by jumping into a bathtub in the snow and ends up in a shabby room, from which he sees himself in a hospital room with his wife and Baba. Nobody can hear him: his body no longer hears his inner self. The last punishment, taking his soul, is done.

What do the missing fingers mean?

K wakes at home with his wife asleep next to him and finds he is missing two fingers, so at least part of the ordeal was real. In the mid-credits scene, K has his finger back and is recommending the clinic to a friend. The film leaves the line between dream and reality blurred on purpose.
