The trouble is not so much with the performers but with what they are asked to do in an idiom borrowed from American teen dramas.

Gippi is an amiable but predictable coming-of-age story of a 14-year-old girl. But the trouble is that Nair, who has also written the story, doesnt go far enough. The milieu she creates is artificial and clich©d.

Ultimately, this could have been a sweet, unusual tale about the triumph of a nerd, yet it's let down by its affected tone. I'm going with two out of five for Gippi. Alas, many of the film's better ideas are lost in execution.

Riya Vij is spontaneous as Gippi. The mom-daughter chemistry between Riya and Divya Dutta is natural, too. But the film could have done with some solid writing, notably in the second half.

An opportunity made to go waste by director Sonam Nair, specially considering she got oodles of acting talent on her side.

Bollyspice · Prateeksha Khot

Riya Vij is simply adorable as Gippi and there is an earnestness and confidence visible on screen which is pretty commendable for a first timer.

This coming-of-age teen comedy is the cutest film you'll watch this year. You'd want to do pinch the cheeks of the person sitting next to you.

GIPPI is delectably served. Not only the girls, but also boys of every age will love it. Moreover, parents are going to have a fab time identifying with the characteristics of the children enacting various roles.

For all its attempts to look and feel different from the run-of-the-mill, Gippi is pretty obviously not the ultimate film about adolescence.

Despite its promising premise, evocative of the quirky American comedy Napoleon Dynamite, writer-director Sonam Nair’s debut film hits rough patches because the writing is so derivative, few of the characters feel particularly…

A lot of this is predictable, which takes out the fun from some really well executed scenes.

Rediff · Kshamya Daniel

It's a movie meant for teens. And it has all the necessary teen masala romance, a makeover, cheesy humour and loud music, says Kshamaya Daniel, who's thrilled that she is finally, officially, 13!

Sonam Nair’s ‘coming of puberty’ film handles simple issues sensitively, though it doesn’t delve too deep. The subtlety appeals, but we wish there was more drama packed in the second half, with a better climax.

What we know

Gippi is a coming-of-age story of an ordinary, overweight girl, who, through the course of the film, learns to love herself for exactly who she is. It is also a tale of an underdog, who picks herself up from nothing and finds herself at the top of her own little world.

How is the fan score worked out?

It is a Fair Score, not a plain average. Votes from brand new accounts, accounts that have rated only one film, several votes from one network, sudden bursts, and accounts that only ever give one star's films 1 or 5 stars count for less. A few early ratings cannot swing it. Nothing is hidden: we show the star bars above.
