Banjo movie review: what critics say (22)
What critics say Critics are largely negative: 1 of 22 rated critics gave it 3.5 or more, 13 gave it 2 or less. Praised: the direction. Criticised: the music and the emotion.
Banjo has practically no redeeming features. It is about a NRI musician's (Nargis Fakhri) search for an original sound which leads her to the banjo artist Tarraat (Riteish Deshmukh) and his rag-tag band, and what happens next.
Read the full reviewRarely does a film press so much noise into service to achieve so little in the end. Heed this warning: don't get within the earshot of Banjo.
Read the full reviewIn the end, the notion of a film about an undervalued genre of musicians is more compelling than "Banjo" itself. It starts out from a promising place, but fails to make any leaps or strides.
Read the full reviewFor a film about music none of the tracks scored by Vishal-Shekhar make an impression, with a few being indistinguishable from the other thanks to Jadhav's extravagant staging and Bosco-Caesar's uninspiring choreography.
Read the full review'Banjo' is a light-hearted entertainer which is just like any other music based film. Looks like, the filmmaker was trying hard to match up to the standards set by 'Rock On' but fails to do so.
Read the full reviewInteresting music pieces(Vishal-Shekhar), a furiously implosive background score(SouravRoy) and a principal cast that believes in the plot's quintessential rags-to-riches logic tends to keep the storytelling afloat. However Banjo…
Read the full reviewBanjo would have been a really good entertainer, if the film had stuck to what the title had promised, instead of straying to other subplots. If you are a Mumbaikar then this is a one time watch for you.
Read the full reviewWith Banjo, Ravi Jadhav, director of celebrated Marathi hits Natrang, Balak Palak and Timepass, makes a strong case for recognising small-time street musicians as bonafide artistes who have the potential to create vibrant…
Read the full reviewIf Banjo had been made by a lesser-known director, these flaws were forgivable to some extent.
Read the full reviewBanjo - Movie Review Riteish Deshmukh starrer Banjo packs in so many hero-villain, poor-rich type clichu00c3u00a9s, and so much melodrama, from the time-tested rule-book, that even if you didnt bother watching the film, youd know…
Read the full reviewThe one thing Ravi does flawlessly is celebrating the city of Mumbai, its indomitable spirit, its unending vibrancy, its energy, all of these find a perfect homage in the movie. The camaraderie between characters is earthen.
Vishal Shekhar give in peppy music and the background score gets loud at times. However, there is nothing really great about it. Mediocre and predictable is how we would describe the film.
BANJO at the most and in all generosity is a TIME PASS only if you love Riteish Deshmukh more than anything else.
Banjo gets a bit lost in its ambition. This movie aspires to be a marriage of Marathi and Hindi culture, it even tries to tie in International music culture with traditional Indian values.
Read the full reviewWhile the first half of the film is simply super, the second half undoes a lot of the expectations. The high emotional quotient drains away into cliché-ridden melodrama, abrupt ends to some threads and a truly hurried ending.
I drove down to see Banjo this evening thinking that it will be a headache and I came out feeling quite sheepish.
Read the full reviewBanjo, led by Riteish Deshmukh and Nargis Fakhri, seems to be grappling with an identity crisis.
A good musical drama suddenly changes into an average formula tale of a hero with a golden heart, villains who can consider a sudden change of mind, heroine with a knack for dancing and stretched dialogue-baazi.
Read the full reviewWhile the story is pretty formulaic (a bunch of street musicians making it big by winning against all odds), the execution and supporting performances are heartfelt. If you are familiar with Mumbai’s working-class neighbourhoods…

Read the full reviewBanjo is easily passable. Why would you waste your money to watch Nargis acting and Riteish juggling between his Lai Bhaari and rockstar character. Banjo could be termed as the most boring music-based film ever!
Read the full reviewBanjo makes a winsome start but takes an awfully tedious route to achieve its happily ever after.Between musicians who double up as goons and a encroachment arc that goes nowhere, Jadhav derails from a slum to stardom tale to…

How is the fan score worked out?
It is a Fair Score, not a plain average. Votes from brand new accounts, accounts that have rated only one film, several votes from one network, sudden bursts, and accounts that only ever give one star's films 1 or 5 stars count for less. A few early ratings cannot swing it. Nothing is hidden: we show the star bars above.
